A data/digital team: why now and how?

Why do you need a data/digital team?


To Techinasia website, in 2018 the eCommerce market has a revenue of US$2,6m and the annual growth rate is expected to be 13.7% from 2018 to 2022. Also, there are 35.4 million eCommerce users in Vietnam in the same year, to Eshopworld blog. Therefore, the data related to customers that a company has to manage increases in a super high speed and the need for a data & digital team to control, analyse and interpret these data appears.


Therefore, that is necessary for companies to find suitable talents and build the team to solve this challenge in Vietnam. Also, it is a big opportunity for HR companies to prepare and deal with the arrival of data era.



How to build a data/digital team?


1. Profile identifying


First of all, you should define which talents you are looking for. Ryan Thorpe mentioned on Towards Data Science that a data & digital team should have mainly three types of profiles: Data Engineer, Data Analyst, and Data Scientist.


However, for HR departments, they can also target the candidates like Digital analyst, Project consultant, Business analyst, Digital analyst, CRM consultant or Data scientist, etc., from junior to senior level. Here are some job description samples for the data/digital team members.


  • Data Analyst

    • Collection and processing of data, by programming algorithms, and analyzing computer databases.

    • Possession of data analysis skills  (scoring, segmentation, geomarketing, surveys, etc.


  • Data Scientist

    • Statistics expertise and creation of machine learning models to make predictions and solve business problems.

    • More depth and expertise in the data analyst skills.


  • Digital analyst

    • Reports conception from Business Intelligence (BI) & Web Analytics to enable teams to have a consistent view of data.

    • Analysis tools management to allow the internal collaborators to carry out the extracts in any autonomy,


2. Profile hunting


Next step is looking for the good profiles through social media, training programs or events/meetups.


  • Social media Ads - Facebook and Linkedin Ads


Paying for Social media Ads is one of the most useful ways to find the talents.


  • Social media share


You can share the hiring posts on social media such as Facebook page, Facebook groups, Twitter, Instagram, etc. You can also use LinkedIn Helper, which helps us to collect the talents and send the invitation to connect. Then you can share your new LinkedIn connections the open positions.


Using agencies like Accenture, Ogilvy, Sutrix or Mirum to find suitable profiles is also a good way.


  • Training programs for MBA and students


There are some courses that you can use to train the data/digital skills of students, including: How to transform data into insights, how to set up a Google Analytics, or How to build a powerful report with Google Data Studio.


  • Event / Meetup about data


You can set up some events or meetups to connect with other people and enlarge your network. 4. Interviewing and examinations


For a short list of candidate, you can prepare the interviews and tests such as Google Digital Active certificate or Google Analytics Individual Qualification to make sure that they are suitable for the team.



5. Build the team


Finally, the best candidates for your data/digital team will be selected from your criteria.
